Hey #Lehigh24! We are so excited to welcome you to our campus and our community. The Summer Reading Program is one of the key methods by which we celebrate your arrival on campus and connect you with current students, faculty, and staff, as well as with your peers. In fact, it is one of the only intellectual experiences you will share with the whole incoming class. So whether you love the book, hate the book, or just can’t wait to debate it, we hope you enjoy the community that forms as you read, discuss, and study the book. Here’s what you need to know:
Do I have to buy my own book? Yes, you do. The book is readily available for purchase online, in paperback and as e-books. If you have any issues getting your hands on a copy, please let us know at LehighSummerReading@lehigh.
When is the discussion? The discussion of the book will take place on the Friday before classes begin. As such, the discussion serves as your first opportunity to participate in the intellectual life of our campus.
Will I be tested on the book? No, but many English 001 courses use the book in their curriculum. In that class you may end up writing a paper on the book, so you will save yourself time and energy if you read it attentively the first time around. You may also want to consider annotating the book or taking notes—this is great practice for the active, college-level reading you will be expected to do here at Lehigh!
So, how should I prepare for the discussion? Read the book! If you would like to go further, check out our resources page for questions to guide your reflection, more information on the authors, and so on.
I love the book! How can I keep thinking about these issues? Stay tuned for more information about possible 5x10 programs related to themes from the book. First-year students are also invited to submit a reflection to the Lehigh Review; the best submissions will be published in April 2021. Check out the Lehigh Review's writing prompts, guidelines, and submission instructions.
We can’t wait to hear your thoughts on the book!
