Doctoral Internship in Psychology

Welcome, and thank you for your interest in the Internship Program at Lehigh University's Counseling and Psychological Services (UCPS). Our doctoral internship program is fully accredited by the American Psychological Association (APA) and is approved as a full member of the Association of Psychology Postdoctoral and Internship Council (APPIC). The following information is intended to help orient you to the Internship Program, the Counseling Center, Lehigh University, and the greater Bethlehem area. The following is a brief introduction to our internship program; however we strongly encourage you to review our internship brochure for a complete description of the training program. The minimum direct hours requirement for applicants is 450 AAPI combined intervention and assessment hours with at least 350 of those hours coming from intervention service activities. Please feel free to contact us by phone 610-758-3880 or Amanda Peterson by email at acp217@lehigh.edu if you have any questions about our program or the application process.

UCPS offers a full-time comprehensive twelve-month Doctoral Internship in Health Service Psychology for students working toward their doctoral degrees in counseling or clinical psychology. We emphasize the core elements of counseling center work in our program; however, the skill set developed is highly transferable to other clinical settings in professional psychology. Two interns are admitted to the internship program per academic year, and a compensation package of $37,000 plus benefits is offered. The internship for the 2024-2025 school year will begin on Thursday, August 1, 2024, and runs for one full calendar year. All interns are introduced to the counseling center and greater university community during an initial orientation period. During orientation, interns also begin to define specific training goals for the internship year and familiarize themselves with the UCPS staff and LU Student Affairs community. While there are core components of the internship program, our aim is to provide individualized training experiences as much as possible to more effectively meet the unique needs and interests of each intern. Because we value diversity in our center, we strongly encourage applicants from diverse backgrounds to apply. This internship site agrees to abide by the APPIC policy that no person at this training facility will solicit, accept, or use ranking-related information from any intern applicant. We thank you again for your interest in our site and welcome you to explore our website and training brochure, or just give us a call as we would be happy to talk with you further about our program.

Please keep in mind that the details outlined on our website are our best efforts to describe the internship program. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have adjusted our clinical services while adhering to health guidelines and the university’s plans for students, staff, and faculty. These guidelines most likely will continue to evolve. Furthermore, we are consulting with training councils, and adhering to state laws and regulations to uphold the quality and integrity of intern training.  Lastly, we are mindful of our own resources and limitations to facilitate staff and interns’ ability to manage the workload and optimize their well-being. Therefore, interns’ clinical activities and supervision described here are only an approximation of interns’ training experience. Dependent on guidelines, our training activities have shifted between in person, completely virtual, and a hybrid of the two. This will likely continue to shift based on recommendations. We have been able to continue to provide each aspect of the training outlined, however, at times it may look different than described on the website.
