Scholarships
The Army Reserve Officers' Training Corps scholarship benefit package covers full tuition and mandatory fees at all of our participating schools. In addition to tuition and mandatory fees, the student is provided a book allowance of $1200 per year, (to be divided equally between semesters or quarters depending on the school's system.
Stipend
All scholarship or contracted cadets and cadets enrolled in the advanced course (juniors and seniors) are entitled to a stipend (subsistence allowance) authorized by law. The stipend is $420/month for all scholarship and contracted cadets during the school year regardless of MS level.
High School ROTC Scholarship (4-year and 3-year advanced designees)
This scholarship type is awarded to high school seniors who will soon graduate or obtain an equivalent certificate. Competition for these scholarships is keen, as over 6000 students from across the country compete for them. Scholarships pay for full tuition and mandatory fees, for both resident and non-resident students. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a monthly tax-free stipend to defray the cost of living.
There are two types of high school scholarships: 4-year and 3-year Advanced Designee. 3-year Advanced Designee scholarship winners must satisfactorily participate in Army ROTC their freshmen year in order for their 3-year scholarship to take effect at the beginning of their sophomore year.
Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must be at least 17 years of age by October of the semester you are entering college
- Must not reach 27 years of age by June 30 of the year you will graduate from college
- If you are taking or have taken college courses you must be considered a freshman and have four academic years remaining for a baccalaureate degree upon enrollment
- Have a minimum high school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Satisfactorily explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction
- Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms, or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States
Those applicants advancing to further scholarship consideration are scheduled for a medical examination and a personal interview.
Personal Interview
This interview may be conducted by telephone or in person depending on the distance involved. Any travel to and from the interview is at your own expense.
Medical Examination
Individuals selected for an interview will be contacted and scheduled for a medical examination by the Department of Defense Medical Examination Review Board (DODMERB). Your medical condition is not a consideration in the selection of winners; however, all winners must be medically qualified and enrolled to receive scholarship benefits. Travel to and from examination is at your own expense.
Military Obligation
If you are selected for a ROTC Scholarship, you are required to:
- Sign a contract with the Secretary of the Army.
- Attend a 30 day Cadet Leadership Course (CLC) between your Junior and Senior Year.
- Accept a Commission to serve on Army active duty, National Guard, or Army Reserves upon degree completion.
- Serve in the military for a period of 8 years. This may be fulfilled by one of the following:
- Serving active duty, if selected, for 4 years followed by 4 years of service in the Inactive Ready Reserve(IRR)/National Guard/Army Reserves. You may elect to serve 8 years or longer on active duty, but only the first 4 are required. Terms of obligation begin at the time of commissioning.
- Serve 8 years in the National Guard/Army Reserves,that includes a 3-6 month active duty term for initial training. Terms of obligation begin at time of commissioning.
Campus-based Scholarships (2-4 years)
Campus based scholarships are offered to students who were not offered or did not apply for the High School ROTC Scholarship or Green to Gold program. These scholarships are extremely limited and may range in length from 2-4 years. Scholarships pay for full tuition and mandatory fees, for both resident and non-resident students. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a tax-free monthly stipend to defray the cost of living. To see if you qualify contact your campus recruiting officer.

- Must not reach 31 years of age by 31 December of the year you will graduate from college
- If you are taking or have taken college courses you must be considered an academic sophomore for the 3-Year and an academic junior for the 2-year Scholarship, and have the same number of years remaining for a baccalaureate degree upon enrollment
- Have a minimum college GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Satisfactory explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction
- Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States

Guaranteed Reserve Force Duty Scholarship
The GRFD program is designed for cadets who are interested in obtaining a commission in the U.S. Army Reserves or National Guard with a guarantee for a reserve component assignment. Scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees, and range in length up to three years. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a monthly stipend. These Cadets also receive weekend drill and annual training pay as participants in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP). Benefits may be recouped if the cadet chooses and is granted conversion to serve on active duty upon commissioning.
Dedicated Army National Guard and Army Reserve Scholarship
GRFD scholarships 2.5 or 3 year are considered dedicated and those students must serve in the National Guard or Army Reserve upon commissioning. These scholarships cover full tuition and mandatory fees. Scholarship awardees also receive a book allowance and a monthly stipend. Scholarships can be awarded in increments up to three years. These cadets also receive weekend drill and annual training pay as participants in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP).
Basic Eligibility Requirements
- Must be a U.S. Citizen
- Must not reach 31 years of age by 31 December of the year you will graduate from college
- Have a minimum High school GPA of 2.5 on a 4.0 scale
- Satisfactory explain any record of arrest and/or civil conviction
- Have no moral or personal conviction against bearing arms or supporting and defending the Constitution of the United States
- Must complete the ROTC Basic Course requirements or Basic Training
- Must be willing to participate in the SMP program with a Guard or Reserve unit. If you do not belong to a unit, you must obtain a letter of acceptance to the unit, stating that they will accept you as a SMP cadet.
- Must be medically qualified
Military Obligation
If you are selected for a GRFD scholarship, you are required to sign a GRFD contract, guaranteeing service in the National Guard or U.S. Army Reserve upon commissioning.
- Serve 8 years in a National Guard or Reserve unit that includes 3-6 months active duty for initial training. Terms of obligation begins at time of commissioning.
- Attend the 30 day Cadet Leadership Course (CLC) between the Junior and Senior year.
- Accept a commission to serve in the National Guard or Reserve upon degree completion.
- Serve as an SMP cadet in the unit of your choice with an available SMP slot.
Green-to-Gold Scholarship
The Green to Gold program provides selected active duty enlisted members of the Army an opportunity to complete their baccalaureate degree requirements and obtain a commission through participation in the ROTC program. If you are currently on active duty and are accepted by a college or university, then you can compete for a Green to Gold scholarship. There are a variety of Green to Gold Scholarships that range widely in length and type of benefits.
Scholarship Eligibility Requirements
- U.S. Citizen (non-waiverable)
- Age - Be under 31 years of age on 31 December of the year you complete all requirements for a commission and a college baccalaureate degree. This is a statutory requirement and there are no waivers authorized.
- Cannot have been convicted of a felony or Domestic Violence Crime
- Have a minimum of 2 years Active Duty as well as 3 months of active duty for every one month of specialized training (waiver can be requested)
- Pass the APFT (Army Physical Fitness Test) within the last 6 months with score of 180 or higher, minimum of 60 points in each event
- Be a High School Graduate or equivalent
- Cumulative High School or College GPA of 2.5
- Letter of Acceptance to School of Choice offering Army ROTC
- Letter of Acceptance from the Professor of Military Science of that Army ROTC Battalion
- Favorable National Agency Check (or have initiated the action)
- DODMERB Medical Qualification
- Be eligible to Re-enlist
- Not be a conscientious objector
- No more than three dependents including spouse (waiverable)
