Position Overview

The in-school tutor supports elementary and/or middle school students during the school day by providing academic assistance, mentorship, and classroom support. Working closely with classroom teachers and the Community School Coordinator, the tutor functions as an additional source of instructional support who helps students succeed academically, socially, and emotionally within the classroom environment.

Tutors serve as positive role models and consistent adult supports for students by demonstrating professionalism, compassion, patience, determination, and initiative. Tutors are expected to build authentic relationships with students, promote confidence and perseverance, and help foster a safe, respectful, and engaging learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

Academic Support

  • Provide one-on-one and/or small-group academic support in classroom content as needed
  • Reinforce classroom instruction and support students in completing assignments, projects, and independent work
  • Assist students with task completion and classroom routines
  • Encourage student participation and confidence in the classroom

Mentorship & Student Engagement

  • Serve as a positive role model by demonstrating kindness, reliability, and respect
  • Build supportive and encouraging relationships with students through consistent daily interactions 
  • Help students navigate academic challenges with patience and compassion

Classroom & School Support

  • Assist teachers with classroom preparation and organization
  • Make copies, organize instructional materials, prepare classroom activities, and distribute resources
  • Help monitor students during independent work, small groups, centers, transitions, or classroom activities
  • Support teachers in maintaining an organized, productive, and student-centered learning environment

Qualifications

  • Current Lehigh University student in good academic standing preferred
  • Interest in community service, education, child development, counseling, psychology, social work, or related fields preferred
  • Experience working with elementary and/or middle school students preferred but not required
  • Ability to work collaboratively with teachers, school staff, and supervisors 

Work Environment
