Refugee Awareness Week Day 1: "Understanding Refugees"

Event Date

Starting of the week with something simple, this event will be a general info session educating faculty and students on differences between refugees and other groups of displaced people, impacts on the United States, and how they are present in the local Lehigh Valley. There will be various activities that encourage empathy building as well as a few surrounding problem-solving for refugees in the Lehigh Valley. Received assistance from a faculty member from the College of Education that has done research in both the Lehigh Valley and abroad on refugees as well as from our advisor, a professor in sociology and anthropology.
In addition to the event, we plan to chalk refugee facts all around campus for students to see and read. There will also be facts placed on small sheets of paper all around campus. If possible, we want lawn signs as well for Refugee Awareness Week events and a few with facts placed around the UC and Memorial Walkway area.
We also will be having a week-long raffle with a Bookstore gift card, encouraging people to follow our social media while encouraging donation towards the local refugee resettlement agency, Bethany Christian Services.

Refugee Awareness Week 2: "A Day in the Life of A Refugee" Refugee Simulation

Event Date

This event is an opportunity for students, staff, and faculty to learn more about what it means to be a refugee. Often there are perceptions that refugees utilize resources unjustly or that it is easy to enter countries like the United States, but this will be a chance to experience a small sense of a refugee may go through before even being identified as a legal refugee. See what tents in a UNHCR supported refugee camp can look like and go through the journey following one of the many stories of a refugee.
From 10am until 4pm, come to Lamberton to see the physical setup!
If unable, come to the VR simulation in the basement of FML and go through the story map to see more of the stories from refugees worldwide.
