Join us for an important and timely panel discussion marking one year since the Israeli occupation began its brutal campaign of ethnic cleansing and genocide in Gaza in response to the horrific October 7th attack by Hamas. The event will feature a presentation from Professor Nitzan Lebovic, Apter Chair of Holocaust Studies and Ethical Values here at Lehigh as well as Professor Sa’ed Atshan, Chair of the Department of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College.
This panel will discuss:
The root causes of the crisis, from historical displacement and occupation to recent escalations.
The impact of Israeli military actions, which have resulted in 70% of the 41,788 deaths being women and children, according to Oxfam, making it the deadliest conflict in modern times for civilians, journalists, aid workers, and healthcare providers.
The international response including the International Court of Justice ruling that there is plausible evidence to believe that Israel is committing genocide, nations like Colombia, Ireland, and Turkey electing to sanction Israel, and 153 UN member states calling for a ceasefire despite opposition from Israel and the United States.
Steps we can take to promote peace and avoid a wider regional war, especially considering the recent displacement of 1 million people in Lebanon due to Israeli invasion and the subsequent response of Iranian rockets being fired into Israel.
We invite students, educators, and community members to engage in this crucial conversation and explore paths to peace and justice for Palestinians, whose rights to sovereignty and self-determination have been systematically denied for decades.
