“The Changing Energy Landscape”

Abstract: Energy stakeholders have inarguably reached a consensus that the future of electricity and manufacturing industries will have a “net zero” value of their emissions, i.e. carbon-free or carbon-neutral to arrest climate change. Western nations are aspiring to reach this goal in the next 2 or 3 decades, while the developing nations in Asia are targeting the seventh or eighth decade. The period between today and when we achieve net-zero emissions is called the Energy Transition period. This presentation-- the first in the seminar series for fall 2024-- underlines the characteristics of the modern grid as it transitions to greener grid. The transition could be bumpy and wrenching for some nations with the constant struggle of balancing decarbonization efforts with assuring traditional grid reliability remains high, sometimes referred to as in the “triple 9” regime. And as expected the transition period will be accompanied with geopolitical tensions.

The Lehigh University Energy Systems Engineering under the ESE Seminar series in fall 2024 will host several talks that address Energy Transition. Two talks in September will address the efforts in Uruguay in transmission planning with high penetration of renewable and the early attempts in India which has set its net zero goals to latter part of this century. Uruguay has achieved 95+% of renewables on the grid in the last two decades. India a rapidly developing country has to balance the increasing demand with high reliability thus requiring continued use of central, fossil-fueled generation. Three talks in October and November will discuss progress in Europe and Australia, as well as the needs for full electrification of all sectors (i.e., net zero).

Communication Strategies for International TAs: Self, Others, and the World

Event Date

Listening is a two-way street. Both international teaching assistants and students need to make an effort to communicate clearly. International TAs should realize how pronunciation of key terms, use of nonverbal communication skills, and approaches for handling student questions all contribute towards clear communication. At the same time, undergraduate students should monitor their own speech so that they speak clearly and appropriately. Participants of this workshop will gain practical strategies they can use for clear communication, whether it be in the classroom, during office hours, or in meetings. Hosted by: International Center for Academic and Professional English (ICAPE) Additional Information can be found at: https://lehigh.campuslabs.com/engage/event/10244619
