Does anyone write in cursive anymore? Can anyone read your handwriting? What about handwritten documents from hundreds of years ago? In this 5x10 students will learn about the intersections between alphabets, languages, cultures, and scripts. We will analyze unique manuscripts written from the Middle Ages to the Modern period in languages including Latin, English, and Arabic. We will demonstrate how to transcribe sections of text in unfamiliar scripts and languages and attempt to translate the text to decode its meaning. Learn how to adapt to challenging and unfamiliar forms of communication. This session will provide an opportunity to interact with centuries-old material and learn about the rare and historical material available through the Lehigh Libraries Special Collections. This workshop will focus on intercultural competence and strategies for building a positive relationship with your international teaching assistant (ITA). Students will discuss ways to strengthen intercultural communication skills, navigate miscommunications, and work more effectively with their multilingual TA. Communication is a two way process. In this session, participants will view Lehigh's vintage postcard collection, identify various postcard formats and handwriting styles, and transcribe handwritten messages. They will also learn how to find more information about the locations, senders and recipients of postcards by using Lehigh Library resources such as Ancestry.com, Historical Newspapers, the Brown and White, Alumni Directories...
