All first-year students have the opportunity to submit a reflection to the Lehigh Review, an entirely student-produced journal containing some of the best scholarly writing by Lehigh undergraduates. Everyone who submits a reflection by Friday, October 25 will receive a 5x10 credit, and a lucky few students will have their reflections published in the journal, under the “Emerging Voices” section. Submissions must be between 300-500 words, typed and submitted to the staff of the Lehigh Review directly (inlr@lehigh.edu) as a Word document. This year's prompts are:
In Lisa Fenn's Carry On: A Story of Resilience, Redemption, and an Unlikely Family, we are presented with bonds that are formed between major cultural, class, and social boundaries. For this prompt, reflect on how you plan to do such boundary crossing during your first year at Lehigh.
Lisa Fenn's Carry On: A Story of Resilience, Redemption, and an Unlikely Family is a story about overcoming odds and, more importantly, how to succeed while doing so. Reflect on a time when you faced insurmountable odds and how you overcame them.

Thirty years ago, 16 students championed together to create a space at Lehigh University that promotes cultural awareness, visibility, and community outreach for all its residents. As the years progressed, the Umoja House has stood the test of time through many trials and triumphs remaining as an edifice that continues to promote unity by upholding the values of Black and Latinx cultures.
On Thursday, October 24th, we’ll join together to honor the founders of the house, who through grit and resilience, shared a vision for a deeper exploration of multiculturalism and diversity. Beginning from the house’s original location - Warren Square A to its current location, The Hill - we will journey together with human storytellers that will recall the journey to the creation of the house. The walk will then commence with an 80’s/90’s block- party.
Afterward, join us for a fun-filled adventure with food trucks, a caricature artist, music, and free food!

In 2017, the Office of Multicultural Affairs and BALANCE (Black and Latino Alumni Network for Community and Equity) started a tradition of joining forces during the Lehigh vs. Lafayette game to promote camaraderie and mutual networking between current students, faculty and staff, and alumni of color. This year, they are joining together yet again for the RIVALRY 155 game and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the Umoja House's existence at Lehigh University. As a special nod to the founders of the Umoja House, we invite you to join us as a special presentation will be unveiled.
Student Registration is free. Please register at go.lehigh.edu/umojacelebration.

Fall 2019 marks a significant time at Lehigh University as we honor the 30th anniversary of the Umoja House residential community. Through a series of events, we commemorate this milestone year, embracing our theme of "Honoring the Past, Embracing the Future", while preserving the meaning of why this space exists at Lehigh University.
For 30 years, Umoja - which means “unity” in Swahili, has fostered a community of student residents and leaders through a shared exploration of diversity and multiculturalism. This community has been a beacon, a destination, a safe-space that unifies and develops student advocates to pursue greater knowledge both academically and socially.
