Performance psychology is all about cultivating deliberate mental strategies that can be used in evaluative, performance-related scenarios.  These scenarios can include athletic competition, musical or performing art performances, military or medical training, and test taking or public speaking to name a few.  There can also be a social component to performance as well when making new friends, meeting new people, or fulfilling various roles on teams and within groups.  Some of the topics that we often work on in performance psychology involve managing nerves, refocusing from distractions, building motivation, enhancing team communication, or moving through setbacks or injuries.  It is important to emphasize that there doesn’t need to be something “wrong” in order to work on these things.  In fact, it can be helpful to build mental skills in a proactive and strengths based way.

UCPS staff include licensed mental health clinicians as well as graduate trainees in sport and performance psychology.  You can learn more about us at https://studentaffairs.lehigh.edu/content/contact-staff

If you have any questions or curiosities about our services, please feel free to contact our center by phone at 610-758-3880 or email at incso@lehigh.edu

Our counselors are eager to get to know you, what you’re up to, and what contributes to your overall sense of wellbeing.  For many students, “performance” can include practice or competition, as well as exams, music or performing arts, interviews, and delivering presentations.  At UCPS, we’re here to support you as you prepare for the high-stakes performance moments in your life.  Appointments can be made by calling UCPS at 610-758-3880 or by emailing incso@lehigh.edu and can occur in-person in Johnson Hall or via Zoom.  You are welcome to meet with any one of our staff members, or can specifically request a performance psychology consultation.
